Taare Zameen Par!!!

No this isnt a film review. Dont generally write one as have friends who can give much better reviews and describe the film in much better way than I can.

Also i dont generally copy ideas from peoples blogs, neither do i copy the theme/content of the posts. But as they say in Indian Film Industry, have been inspired from Pratiksha's O3 blogs and hence am writing this post.

And its not the viewing of the film that made me write this post. Its rather its tagline. "Every child is special" does make you wonder whether its really true [mainly bec of introspection :)].

But the tagline of this post of mine would rather be "Every friend is special". I was often asked as to whos my best friend and i kept wondering as each friend had their level of closeness and mutual sharing. How can one compare a friend with other. If thats done the entire meaning of friendship is lost. A friend is to be accepted the way (s)he is and cherished for the way the friendship is.

But yeah, not sirf dard mein, but aise bhi beetein lamhe bahut yaad aatein hai.

Those innumerous train travels and eating of bhajiyas and samosas, those bunking of classes to play cricket, those burgers & cocktails at canteen in school, those bike rides & writing of poetry, those long talks on phone & fighting on petty things, those childish arguments, watching movies together & sipping coffee @ CCD/Barista/TCs/Mint, those filmy dialogues, those night-outs at my home, those sessions where we played cards/sequence/cricket, those cricket matches & ducks at grounds on sundays, those trips to and from surat in buses, those drinking sessions in daman/'k'ampus, and many many more......

Sorry if i forgot something very significant... Just that am posting this at 2 in the night might justify the (unintentional) omission.

Hope you had as much fun reading this post as much as I did remembering all those times.

In the end, theres a feeling of nostalgia. And my heart says "Jaane kaha gaye woh din, ab nahi lagta dil yaaron ke bin"

Team Work or the lack of it.

We all keep talking about the importance of team work and that the group should be in synergy and work towards a common goal. Its not only important in corporate world but also in sports and other group tasks.

Am quoting a real-life example here which was so very ordinary but could turn out to be a bigger lesson than any of the OB chapters.

The other night our group of 7 - Alok, Gaurav, Girish, Mayank, Mohit, Neha and me, had gone for dinner to a restaurant called SEA QUEEN. But even before reaching there we saw glimpses of conflicting individual choices. After eventually deciding on SEA QUEEN and landing there, everyone had their own choices. Some wanted to have 'kofta' while others wanted to have 'mushroom'. There was yet another group who wanted to drink beer and someone who wanted to have weird starters like German Potato Salad. If it was a marketing CASE STUDY, all these could have worked as criteria for segmenting. But we had gone there as one bunch of friends and couldnt understand why no one even wanted to compromise and eat something that everyone could share.

Due to all the arguments, someone suggested to order whatever one wanted. Someone also suggested to form 2 groups of 4 & 3 and order food of their choices. Eventually, in order to please everyone we ended up ordering so much that couldnt eat some of it.

Just remembered the days when our college (DDIT) group of 14 went out to eat. Inspite of being exactly double in size, it always seemed to be in complete harmony. May be after all the work experience, it was the ego that came into the picture and made people make their presence felt by ordering something weird.

But the group is generally insync because each of us work as a seperate entity. Looking forward to another OB lesson on our next dinner outing ;)

Roobaroo - 2007

Roobaroo is the inter section competition which was held in IIM-K thats strecthed across 3 days starting from thursday and ending with a grand party on saturday.

The events ranged from Theme Quiz (Greek Mythology) to marathon to dumbcharades to treasure hunt.

Saturday was the grand finale and in race for the trophy were Section A and Section C. I am in Section C and we call ourselves Sec-C. In grand finale we had competitions in the field of group/solo dance, solo/group singing, instrumental, skit and others.

I was a part of the dance group and we performed first. We also ranked first as there was no competition in the group dances.

I also danced solo on songs "dus bahane" and "dhoom again". It was more of an impromopto decission and hadnt practised the dance even once. I gave my name just for the sake of more entries from our section. Forgot many steps in the second song but the overall performance was considered decent (though i didnt like it at all). Hence i landed at 3rd place.

Our section got prizes for other competitions too and eventually were declared winners. But there seems to be some controversy now about the winners and actual point tally. Lets see who eventually is the winner. We had a great time.

And then came the party. With lots of booze and loud music everyone went into a trance and was having a great time. There was a lot of head banging, hip shaking, cheek kissing going on.

The party ended at 4am and then we formed a group (of around 20) and were singing songs ranging from Maeri to Lemon tree.

Have a very sore throat now and could hardly speak in the morn.

Will be uploading the pics soon on "http://neel-pics-iimk.blogspot.com"

Now comes the tough part... STUDIES!!!

Aao CRIB kare!

Crib! Crib! Crib!

I often used to wonder what the biggest problem our country faced was. I personally felt that the 2 major forces which held India back were PROVERTY and ILLITERACY. Yes, corruption, overpopulation and complacency are also major issues but these are lifeless. They exist due to the above mentioned 2 major problems. These can be termed as side-effects.

But off-late I seem to have changed my opinion and now feel that it’s the mindset of the people. They resist accepting the change which is for the better of the most and fail to understand the status quo. These guys just crib about anything and everything. (Hope I am not doing the same). Ill just quote a few examples which made (inspired would be the most inappropriate word) me write this post.

RJ once was cribbing about the rain and that it forms puddles on the road. Wasn’t he the one who was waiting for it eagerly few days back? Doesn’t he know what respite rains bring to people?

Then I heard him crib about the construction work that was going on to widen the roads. Wasn’t he the one who pointed out that the hawkers were occupying valuable space by roadside which could be used for vehicles to commute on?

Then I was reading a national newspaper and they had carried out a survey and came up with stats which mentioned how much electricity and water was wasted in a movie shoot. Doesn’t the same news company vouch for exclusive rights of the awards function? Isn’t it the media house that wants bollywood to bring an Oscar to India?

Being so much exposed to media of all sorts I almost came to a conclusion that it was the cribbing nature of the people here which don’t let the country prosper. Can’t they just mind their own business and let the concerned person do his work. But after all it is about the TRPs, the advertisements and MONEY!

Evolution

Evolution

The other day, me and my friends were sitting in a café and discussing about various things and suddenly somebody came up with the term EVOLUTION. That led the discussion to how human being evolved and that we got our backs straightened, our thumbs got closer to index finger, our brains got smarter, etc. Then we discussed about movie Evolution and Hollywood movies in general. Then came the inevitable comparison of Hollywood and Bollywood and how they themselves have evolved with time. This like India v/s Pakistan is discussed with great passion and excitement. The group is always divided into Bollywood lovers and Hollywood fanatics. But then someone mentioned the persona of the Hollywood Heroes and how they were so different from their Bollywood counterparts. The discussion as usual couldn’t reach to a consensus.

I went back home and couldn’t stop comparing Indian movie stars amongst themselves. Then I remembered the term EVOLUTION. Some actors seem to have evolved with time while the rest still play safe by doing roles they are good at vouching for commercial success. Amir Khan, at the start of the career, did run around tress singing songs, trying to woo the heroines, but he evolved with time and knows his responsibility. Now he does films with a message, roles that have substance. On the other hand, Sharukh Khan still doesn’t want to come out of the Yash Raj and Yash Johar banner. He will continue doing the same roles with different heroines. The biggest surprise was lack of evolution of Amitabh Bachchan. Everyone thought that after KBC and tens of films and hundreds of advertisements, His debts would have been cleared. He also has a working wife, son & daughter-in-law. But He is still ready to do the pathetic advts. I think He’s failed to evolve with time. Hope he doesn’t loose the hard-earned respect and love of so many of His fans.

Sorry!

Sorry!

I have a tear in my eye
Think you know the reason why
Wouldn’t be able to say so am penning it down
Have failed to see the affection you’ve shown
Couldn’t manage to gracefully accept love & success
My reaction often leaves me and others in a mess
After that I can’t stay in a happy mood
Nothing around seems to be good
You’ve always been so nice, you’ve always been sweet
I keep saying that stupid things I wouldn’t repeat
But end up doing the same thing again
Making you sad and leaving you in pain
But even my heart’s heavy, it wants to cry
Throat’s choked as if because of a tight tie
I’ll suffer an attack or go into a coma
Life without you is a terrible trauma.

Hope

“And its HOPE, that keeps me going on... and its HOPE, that makes me carry on…” that’s what a song by Shaggy said. I think that’s the case with most of us and am sure most of us would be able to relate to it. After all, the entire world runs on HOPE.

So this India Poised campaign has reinstalled the Hope in the Indians and especially in the youth who wanna make a +ve change. But then, my mind cant stop wondering as to why suddenly the youth seems to be having stimulated brain cells with an urge to fight for the right. Why suddenly 2007 be the Year of India. What didn’t happen in past 60 years of independence suddenly seems to be happening and that too at a fast pace.

Till now there existed people with extreme beliefs. One who thought that our country – India was doomed and heading downwards. It couldn’t ever emerge from the deep pit of corruption, illiteracy, poverty and over population, instead it could only sink further in. The other were the rigid ones who believed that India was the best planet on planet Earth because of our culture and traditions which dated way back.

What seems to be the change is the emergence of people with belief other than these two and more and more such people are coming forth. They are the optimistic ones who accept India with all its negatives but look forward to eradicating them. Shah Rukh Khan in the film Swades very nicely said, “Main nahi manta Bharat duniya ka sabse mahan desh hai, par ha, hum mein mahan banne ki shamta zarur hai”. There are problems which cant be ignored or rather shouldn’t be ignored. But again, u just cant sit at a tea-stall and crib about the status-quo. What the film Yuva taught us was that you need to make a change youselves. “Everybody says (Indian) politics is a gutter but no one wants to go down and clean it” said Anil Kapoor in the film Nayak.

Complacency which was wide spread amongst people seems to be evaporating quickly and more people in their youth are working to make the country better. This can be elaborated by comparing our mindsets now and then. Earlier we used to be happy enough by comparing ourselves by comparing ourselves with our so called enemies Pakistan and other neighbouring countries. But now we compare India with USA, the most powerful nation in the world. We aim high, we want to be at the top. With a growth rate of over 8% and with IT, Telecom, Service Sector booming, theres only one way India is going… UP.

The most important thing for a country to prosper is that every citizen should be proud of the country themselves. National Anthem, National Flag and even our PM and President should be respected. People should be patriotic and that doesn’t mean singing the National Anthem or getting into the army to fight at the border. Spreading education, planting trees, preventing people from littering, reducing land, air, water pollution, shutting down automobile engines when not in use and saving resources, etc are all patriotic atcs. So as the campaign says, “ITS TIME TO FLY”, so see you up there.

Discrimation

This time its about Gender Descrimination that does exist in the society.

We would be fighting for the equality of Men and Women but the discrimination has persisted for a long time and is very much evident.

Women fight for the rights and the indifferent treatment and am too for this movement and would fight for equality.

But many a times its the predominant male sex that has to suffer.

There are girls quota while admission to colleges, train ticket bookings, even in the queues that are formed for ticket collection.

No one opposes these while everyone is ready to leave their work (read duty) and march on the road and protest against OBC quotas.

Also its award season and something that made me write this post is the category called “Best Actor - Female“.

Its an open competition so why cant we have a fair competition between the two genders.

We have accepted the inter gender fight for the category called “Actor in a negative role“. Then why not for the +ve end too.

Why does the difference exist ???

Am not saying that women are getting unfair advantage over men but if we do think seriously it should be the women themselves who should be fighting to be treated equally, be it in attaining their rights or a competition in any field.

But when both the genders studying in a co-ed school get the same oppurtunities and same treatment, then later on why can a girl choose from a general quota and girls quota while the boys dont have any such option.

would like to get the reviews of both guys and gals on this one.

No offense intended to any sex.

[ I just pray that a time doesnt come when one wants/prays to be a woman from OBC quota to get all the undeserved priviliges ]

Mera Bharat (not so) Mahaan

This is a view shared by a few of us friends and am posting on behalf of the group.

India 1947, Israel 1948, Singapore 1965.

What the hell is the meaning of these figures? Who cares about the transformation occurred in Israel and Singapore till date.

What we in India have is freedom.

Can you imagine chewing gum was banned in Singapore till last year? And here we not only have freedom to enjoy it but also to stick it anywhere. The guys in Singapore missed so much fun.

And yeah, forget about human beings, India shows full concern towards animals too. Dogs are free to move anywhere; on roads (causing accidents), in gardens (shitting, pissing and biting) and on top of our cars. And what can I say about the most revered, holiest mother COW! Cow slaughter is a crime here, so we decorate the roads with garbage and let them savour it. PETA should confer us with a medal for such philanthropy.

Oh, but this is all so pointless! Pointless at a point when we are creating another Silicon Valley and growing at a compounded 9-10% rate. So forget it. So I warmly and heartily welcome one and all to India; a land where you can demand your rights but don't need to perform your duties; where freedom is in the air just like water on the streets in monsoon; and rules and regulations. . . oh, what's that!

We are bored of hearing people cursing the politicians and flowing to US and UK for better future...

But the fact of the matter is that like others we are running away from responsiblities... our responsiblities towards the country...

All of us try and bribe the officials either to get our work done on top priority or to save ourselves from being lashed by a fine...

We litter on road and curse the Municipal auhorities that they havent done their duty...

Am just too tired of it man...

this country is full of hypocrites which keeps on promising good deeds but when its time to perform, they back out.

Just a thought....

“What if all the politicians, celebrities and industrialists give some percentage of their money to the poor.... wouldnt we be able to eradicate poverty... am sure the money would be able to get people above poverty line“

i know this is an absurd and a very weird thought but the fact of the matter is that i wanna see my country at the top... its out of sheer patriotism...

so as to what u can do abt it :-
1. Persuade people not to spit around and not to litter... try and guide them
2. Try and put up dust bins in the city
3. (For the educated lot)... go to ur ex schools and educate the younger lot... atleast we can work on improving the future...

Many other things which u all do know and can work out for urselves.

Poem (21.04.07)

=============================================
The mood of the poem doesnt necessarily indicate the mood of the poet.
So please dont assume anything.
======================================================
I feel lonely, I feel sad
And this feeling drives me mad
I never thought I would feel this way
Thought my mind and heart would always obey
They say that things change with time
It also is true for relationships of mine
I always knew I wouldn’t be consistent
But to try hard I was persistent
I wanted to be there for all my friends
Even if we were at world’s opposite ends
And wanted them to continue being nice and sweet
And should be reason so that we often meet
But before the physical distance could draw us apart
They have distanced themselves and asked for a new start
I don’t call because talks of mine irritate
I don’t meet because every action they hate
Why should I be nostalgic and cling to the past
I always knew forever this wouldn’t last
I need to move on and move on fast
Life is a theatre and am part of the cast
I have to meet other actors who are waiting for me
Have to play my role as written by the Almighty

I wonder why...???

Why do we call the stones on roadside "milestones" when they show distance in kilometres ???

Why do we keep the headlights of our automobiles on when the road is fully lit up by the streetlights ???

Why cant we have solar power stations for individual home/building ???

Why do we have a 3rd umpire on a cricket ground when there are big LCD screens installed on the grounds ???

Why does a person fighting against corruption doesnt mind bribing a traffic policeman on getting caught ???

Why dont we ask questions ???

Why ???
